  • Aerial Drones for Research

Whether it's surveying or urban planning, innovation in media coverage, new capabilities for emergency responders, or environmental research and monitoring, the use of drones and the sensors they carry can expedite their work in significant ways. Drones represent a tremendous opportunity to support and collaborate with a wider cross section of agencies, augmenting data capture, availability and interpretation.

  • Satellite Tracking of Birds

Birds are fitted with a unique wing-tag to help scientists identify them in the field. Some of these birds were rescued and cared for by the experts at the GONHS Raptor Unit. Project members closely analyse the movements of the birds. In addition to providing valuable research information that can be used for conservation and environmental education, the project also helps raise awareness on the importance of protecting birds of prey, some of which are threatened in Europe.

  • Cetacean Survey research

The main objective of the Cetacean Protocol is to protect dolphins and whales in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters (BGTW) given that several species of Cetaceans use the Bay as feeding and calving grounds. Gibraltar is responsible for their protection in BGTW and all Cetaceans and marine reptiles are protected by law in Gibraltar under the Nature Protection Act 1991.

GIBRALTAR

Climate Change Strategy

Gibraltar is, in many respects, already quite resilient to climate change due to the fact that, for historical political reasons, it has had to develop a high degree of self-sufficiency. Measures undertaken over the years, although never specifically identified as climate change adaptation, have nonetheless served as such. Examples of Gibraltar’s adaptive actions include:our own power generation; water desalination for potable water supply; reinforcement of coastal revetments to withstand a 1 in 200-year storm; development of separate sewer and storm networks for all new developments
