How to Recycle WEEE

Rapid advances in technology and an expanding demand for new features accelerate the generation of electronic waste. Every year in Gibraltar a large number of computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions, and other electronic items become obsolete and if not reused or recycled properly could potentially harm our environment.

You will see when you purchase electrical or electronic equipment that they carry the ‘don't bin it’ symbol.

This means that it cannot be disposed of in your household bin.

When purchasing a new electrical or electronic product, the local retailer is obliged to offer a free take-back service on the item being replaced. The take-back service works on a ‘like for like’ basis. This means, for example, that when you purchase a DVD player you could return a record player. Businesses must accept it even if it is a different type or brand to those sold by them and even if the product was purchased elsewhere. For more detailed information click at Businesses and the WEEE Regulations

The type of items that qualify for the take-back service can be found at Detailed List of WEEE

If you wish to dispose of goods yourself, Government has provided six WEEE bins distributed throughout Gibraltar to provide ease of access to the local community for the recycling of small WEEE items. For information on the location of these bins please click here. In addition, the Government has also set up a facility for the collection and sorting of all WEEE including large boilers, washing machines, etc. Our Civic Amenities Site is situated at Europa Advance Battery on Europa Advance Road and is operated by Gibraltar General Support Services Ltd.
